FAQs

What is a day cream and what does it do?

A day cream is the moisturiser you apply in the morning, after cleansing, to hydrate your skin and protect it through the hours it spends exposed to daylight, pollution, heating and air conditioning. A good day cream absorbs quickly, sits comfortably under makeup and supports your skin barrier rather than simply resting on top of it. It is the second of the three steps we believe a complete routine needs, alongside a good cleanser and a targeted night cream. We don't believe in seven-step routines. Three steps are enough when the products are right.

What makes a DOS luxury day cream different?

Our day creams are built on botanical actives, the active compounds found in Greek herbs from the Olympus region, rather than a single isolated ingredient. We use the whole herb so those compounds work together in synergy, and we pair them with an advanced absorption technology developed in our own lab that carries them past the surface into the deeper layers of the skin. Everything is made in small batches in our own facility, by a daughter and father team with a pharmaceutical background. Every formula is clinically tested for safety, free of parabens, sulfates and PEGs, contains zero alcohol, is cruelty-free, and has its full ingredient list published on our site.

Which DOS day cream is right for my skin?

That depends on more than your skin type. We look at five things before we recommend anything: your skin type, your skin's tendency (dehydration, oxidation or oiliness), the season, your age and your sensitivity level. If your skin is oily or reactive, this matters even more, because the wrong texture will feel heavy or greasy within an hour no matter how good the formula is. The fastest way to find yours is our Skin Test, which takes a few minutes and returns a personalised three-step routine rather than a list of products to choose between.

Do I need a day cream all year round?

Not necessarily, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Most of the industry says to use a day cream every day, but a day cream isn't well absorbed by every skin in every season. Some skins do better with a hydrating serum through the summer months, when the warmth and humidity already do part of the work, and then move to a richer day cream in autumn and winter when the air is dry and the barrier needs more support. Our seasonal protocols exist for exactly this reason, and the Skin Test will tell you which your skin needs right now.

Do your day creams contain SPF, and can they replace sunscreen?

No. Our day creams are formulated to hydrate, support your barrier and defend against everyday environmental stress, but they are not a substitute for sun protection. Apply your sun protection as the last step of your morning routine, once your day cream has fully absorbed. Sun protection is the single most effective daily habit for preventing dark spots and pigmentation, which is the concern more of our customers come to us with than any other.

How do I apply a day cream, and how much should I use?

Apply your day cream every morning to clean, slightly damp skin, which helps it absorb. A pea-sized amount is enough for the face, neck and décolleté; more than that will sit on the surface rather than sink in. Smooth it upwards and outwards, and give it a minute or two to absorb before sun protection or makeup. If you use a serum, it goes on first, before your day cream.

How long before I see a difference?

Most people see a visible difference within 7 to 10 days of consistent daily use. That is by design rather than luck, and it comes from the concentration of botanical actives in our formulas combined with the absorption technology that carries them deeper into the skin. Hydration, comfort and radiance are the first things you'll notice. Deeper concerns such as dark spots and pigmentation take longer and respond best to a full protocol rather than a single product.
